ScrapBand Award 2017

Create homemade instruments from scrap. Play music as a group. Learn about instruments and music from around the world, while working towards a recognised Arts Award.
Children taking part will have the fantastic opportunity to have fun and express themselves, create something as a group, and come away with a certificate* to show for it. These sessions are for enthusiastic committed children, between 6 and 11 years of age, who may get the chance to perform later in the year!
The first session is on Monday 23rd October 2017 and there are six sessions in total (each session runs 1-4pm).
You will need to attend at least four of the following dates to earn your certificate:
- Monday 23rd October
- Wednesday 25th October
- Friday 27th October
- Monday 30th October
- Wednesday 1st November
- Friday 3rd November
The sessions are FREE, but we only have space for 20 participants.

* The children will be working towards an Arts Award Discover or Arts Award Explore, dependent upon their age. Arts Award Discover is an introductory award designed for ages 5 and above. Arts Award Explore is an Entry Level (Entry 3) qualification on the Regulated Qualifications Framework designed for ages 7 plus.
About the organisers
Beth Morley — Project Co-ordinator
I started my working life in the world of recycling and waste. Developing and delivering community engagement, education and behavioural change projects at Nottingham City Council. Projects included feeding 5000 of Nottingham City’s Residents in one afternoon with food surplus and bringing a one of a kind art exhibition ‘Trash to Treasure’ to Nottingham. In my spare time I set up a local stay and play group and also work on Sneinton Festival organising committee. I joined PlayWorks this year and love working with the inventive and dedicated staff as well as the imaginative children!
Juliet O'Donnell — Playworker
I am a trained councillor and artist. I have over ten years experience of working within local communities running play and craft sessions. I am passionate about using play and art sessions as a positive way of engaging people and developing their self-esteem, to learn about positive social interaction and to enable inclusion. I have recently won an award for Bringing Communities Together.
Cathy Denman — Playworker
I am an enthusiastic, patient, dedicated and qualified childcare professional with over twenty-five years experience of working with children from a few months to 15 years. I have a range of childcare work including nurseries, primary schools, managing holiday playschemes and afterschools clubs. Providing safe, high quality play provision that responds to the age, gender, ability and cultural needs of all children.
Will Liassou — Playworker
I am passionate about sport and play, and the positive difference it can make to individuals and communities, I have over 10 years experience of running community sports and play projects. I played professional football in my home country of Ivory Coast, and I am now an F.A. football coach and community event organiser, who has received the Best Community Event award by Nottingham City Council in 2014.
Morag Christie — Music Session Staff
I have been a professional musician for thirty years, playing in bands and playing all types of music. I have been teaching learners of all ages from 7 to 65 years for 7 years, and also work as a music leader at an after school club for young people with learning difficulties. I am committed to meeting the individual needs of each individual learner, and above all to make learning fun!
Richard Grindon — Music Session Staff
I have over thirty years drumming and performance experience, deliver drumming workshops across the UK, and have worked with well-known artists and musicians. I bring a fast paced and energetic approach to the PlayWorks ScrapBand sessions.
