Sewing Classes

Make Do and Mend

PlayWorks are pleased to offer a series of sewing classes teaching people the basics of using a sewing machine and then progressing on to making high quality items using scrap material from our very own ScrapStore. Classes are currently held on the second Saturday of the month here at PlayWorks from 10am till 1pm (with a little bit of extra time if you have not finished your project)

You can come on your own or bring your child providing they are 8 years or over and you are happy for them use fabric scissors and the machine in a mature and careful manor.

Examples of some of the classes we run are below;

Getting started with machine sewing

This session will be perfect for complete beginners, as well as those of you who haven’t sewn in a while and want a refresher.

In this session we’ll look at:

Demystifying how a sewing machine works
How to thread the machine and make basic stitches
Adjusting the machine’s settings for different fabrics and sewing tasks
Troubleshooting problems
Finding out what all those fancy-looking stitches are really for!

After this session you will have all the basic skills needed to continue with the rest of the Make Do and Mend Sewing Classes.

Cushion covers

In this class we’ll be working on:

Choosing suitable fabrics, measuring and cutting
Planning a design using scrap fabrics
Sewing straight lines and turning corners
Sewing a hem
Making a buttonhole (optional)

Sewing Kits

Make a carry case for your threads, tape measure, seam ripper and needles. Could be used to carry around other bits and bobs like make up etc.

Building on your previous skills, we’ll also be learning to:

Insert a zip
Sew around curves
Apply press studs

Card Wallets

Learn to make a perfectly practical and personal gift (or keep it for yourself!). This wallet has a section for bank cards, store cards and business cards, a section for bank notes and receipts. It can be designed to fasten shut with a button or press stud.

All the sewing techniques for this wallet are quite simple, but we’ll be working on sewing as neatly as we can. We’ll be working on the following skills:

Choosing suitable fabrics, measuring and cutting
Planning a design using scrap fabrics
