Make Do and Mend
PlayWorks are pleased to offer a series of sewing classes teaching people the basics of using a sewing machine progressing on to making high quality items using scrap material from our very own ScrapStore. Classes will be held on the second Saturday of the month here at PlayWorks.
Getting started with machine sewing
This session will be perfect for complete beginners, as well as those of you who haven’t sewn in a while and want a refresher.
In this session we’ll look at:
- Demystifying how a sewing machine works
- How to thread the machine and make basic stitches
- Adjusting the machine’s settings for different fabrics and sewing tasks
- Troubleshooting problems
- Finding out what all those fancy-looking stitches are really for!
After this session you will have all the basic skills needed to continue with the rest of the Make Do and Mend Sewing Classes.
PlayWorks encourages families to Play together therefore, we are offering a special adult and child tuition price to learn together, sharing the same machine. Please note that we have no lower age limit as such, however we do expect that you make your own judgment as to whether the child will participate for the full 3 hours and be confident using sharp dress making scissors.

Is there parking available?
As the class is 3 hours long we recommend using nearby public parking at the Victoria Centre or Forest Park and Ride or using public transport. We are conveniently situated a short walk from Mansfield Rd and Woodbourgh Rd and the many bus routes available.
There is a 2 hour parking bay available on St Ann’s Way adjacent to the PlayWorks building however we cannot guarantee there will be space available on the day. Note there are several resident parking bays so please be careful not to use these.
